What is number porting?

Number porting

Number porting is the process of moving an existing phone number from one carrier to another, so a business keeps the same number when it changes provider.

How number porting works

The business asks the new carrier to take over the number. The new carrier requests the transfer from the current carrier, usually with documents that prove the business holds the number. On an agreed date the number is switched to the new carrier's network, and calls start arriving there. Requirements and timing depend on the country and number type.

Before you port

  • Check that the new carrier supports porting for your country and number type.
  • Keep the account with your current carrier active until the port completes.
  • Prepare the routing on the new system in advance so calls are answered from the first minute.

Number porting with phone.systems™

Number porting is a DIDWW service. Porting to DIDWW is free in 42 countries and for UIFN numbers (universal international freephone numbers — see toll-free number). Once a number is ported, you assign it to the phone.systems™ trunk in your DIDWW account and it becomes available in the Numbers area for your call flows.

If you do not want to port, you can keep numbers with your current carrier and connect it through BYOC. See how to set up phone.systems™.
