What is a cloud PBX?

Cloud PBX

A cloud PBX (private branch exchange) is a business phone system that runs as an online service: the provider hosts the software that connects calls, and the business manages numbers, users and routing in a browser.

How a cloud PBX works

A PBX is the switchboard of a company phone system: it connects external calls to the right person and lets colleagues call each other on short extensions. A traditional PBX is a box installed in the office. A cloud PBX does the same job in the provider's data centres. Calls travel over the internet using VoIP, and users answer them in an app or on an IP phone.

Cloud PBX or on-site PBX?

  • No hardware to buy or maintain — the provider runs and updates the system.
  • Works anywhere — users in the office, at home or travelling use the same numbers.
  • Changes in minutes — routing, users and numbers are edited in a browser.
  • Pay per user — cost follows the number of seats rather than the size of the hardware.

On-site PBXs still suit sites that must keep calls on a local network, but most new systems are cloud-based.

phone.systems™ as a cloud PBX

phone.systems™ is a cloud PBX run by DIDWW. Administrators build routing as a visual call flow, add users with extensions, and connect numbers from DIDWW or from their own carrier through BYOC. Users call from the phone.systems™ app on macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android, or from any SIP phone. It costs $9.99 per seat per month, month-to-month. See the business phone system.
